WHy call it
“MESSY”?
M.E.S.S.Y. DISCIPLES is all about helping you and your fellow disciples roll up your sleeves and get your hands ‘messy’ for the cause of Christ. The idea is that when someone is working for God, the evidence will be on our hands. “You shall know a tree by its fruit,” after all (Matthew 7:20). Discipleship is messy. Living the Christian life can get messy. But we continue to work, and the evidence will be all around us. Jesus uses the analogy of a seed being planted in the dirt. It gets messy, but the result? A bumper crop!
“Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” — John 12:24
This is the idea of what being a “messy” disciple is all about. It’s willingly rolling up your sleeves and getting into the dirt, giving up your own desires and wants in order to bear fruit for God. The results will be undeniable! And with God’s blessing, through your efforts, many more seeds will be produced as well!

THE 5 M.E.S.S.Y. Actions EXPLAINED
M — MAKE CONNECTIONS (With God and Others)
Discipleship is about cultivating your connection with God, and also with the people in your sphere so you can share your connection to God with them as well.
WITH GOD — Hebrews 10:22: “let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.”
WITH OTHERS — Acts 2:44: “And all who believed were together and had all things in common.”
E — Engage Scripture
Reading Scripture is important, but it’s no substitute for ENGAGING Scripture. The difference? One is passive, and does not usually result in transformation, and the other is where we become active participants with God’s Word for the purpose of life transformation. It’s about putting God’s Word in your HEART, not just on your lips.
Psalm 119:11: “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
S — Share God’s Word
After having been touched and transformed by God’s Word daily, we must not keep that message to ourselves! Jesus desires that we spread His Word to all creation. This can be as in-depth as sharing the gospel with someone, or as simple as sharing a verse that stood out to you during your daily engagement of scripture.
Mark 16:15: “And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.’”
S — Serve PEOPLE
Jesus Himself came not to be served, but to serve. How can we claim to be disciples of Jesus if we don’t also serve others? This is how we show people who Jesus really is, and give people a taste of God’s love.
Matthew 7:12: “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
Y — Yield TO THE SPIRIT
Disciples of Jesus are called to be living sacrifices (Romans 12:1-2). That means we put aside what our flesh naturally desires to do, and instead present our bodies to God’s Spirit as useful tools in His toolbox of kingdom growth.
Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

grow a culture of discipleship organically
If implemented within your congregation, the M.E.S.S.Y. SMALL GROUPS will help to organically grow a movement and culture of discipleship within your church by gently leading group members toward being able and ready to branch out and start their own M.E.S.S.Y. SMALL GROUP, and in so doing, bring another 1 to 5 new disciples into the movement. Within one generation of this process, you could have 36 disciples actively working toward discipleship, and within only two generations, you could have over 200 disciples on-board! This has the amazing potential to completely transform your congregation for the cause of Christ! This organic growth is baked-in to the discipleship PATHWAYS in the journal.
